The How to Build a Deck Step by Step

How to Build a Deck with Steps

Building a deck is actually a simple job even if you are not a professional. What you really need is a good instruction. As long as you follow a good instruction how to build a deck step by step, you won’t lose any grip and you can get your favorite deck.

You have to do think about the pre-construction before starting to build your deck. You should decide, what size of deck you want? What is the shape? Do you want any stairs? If you do, how much stairs you need? What types of decking will you use and how will you fasten it? Do you need railing for your deck? If you do, what style of railing do you want? All of the answers will be your pre-construction process. It is very important because even if you have had the complete material, but you don’t know where you should begin, it will be useless.

The process of how to build a deck step by step begins with setting your pier pads. When setting them, make sure that they stick solidly on the soil. After that, measure and cut the posts for support beams. The ledger should be at least the thickness of the decking below the door going on to the deck. The next step is, install your floor joist, which is usually 2×6, 2×8, or 2×10 boards. It should be the same size with the ledger you’ve fastened on the wall. After installing the floor joist, now you have to lay the decking. In this case, you have an opportunity to make your deck look nicer. In this process, you have to give space to the boards slightly for expansion and contraction of the decking and draining the rain water.

The last step of how to build a deck step by step is building the deck railing. It is optional, but if your deck more than 30’’ above the ground, you need it. You can make railings from 2×2 cedar balusters vertically, with a 2×6 rail at the top. Now you see, even non-carpenter can make a good job led by a good instruction.
